TCCI® Director, Professor Ying Mao Introduces New Technologies for Epilepsy Treatment in a Paper Published in the Journal Nature, Biomedical Engineering

On September 28, Professor Ying Mao, Director of the Tianqiao and Chrissy Chen Institute for Translational Research, and Professor Cong Li from the School of Pharmacy at Fudan University, published a paper, titled ” An electric-field-responsive paramagnetic contrast agent enhances the visualization of epileptic foci in mouse models of drug-resistant epilepsy” in the journal Nature Biomedical Engineering.

The article introduces a class of electric field response magnetic resonance probes based on micellar structures. In the mouse focal epilepsy model, the probe can actively cross the blood-brain barrier into the lesion area, realize the accurate positioning of acute and spontaneous mouse epilepsy lesions, and increase the chances of surgical treatment for patients with refractory epilepsy.

The electric-field-responsive contrast agent may increase the probability of detecting seizure foci in patients and facilitate the study of brain diseases associated with epilepsy.
